The renowned artist Ernst Gamperl has revolutionized the historical technique of woodturning and set new standards in this craft. The BNM is showing the results of the “Tree of Life” project.
Gamperl models fascinating vessels and objects using a working technique that borders on magic. The elemental force of the material is reflected in the archaic, almost monumental forms. At the same time, the extremely thin-walled works surprise with their delicacy.
The exhibition presents Ernst Gamperl's “Tree of Life Project” for the first time in Germany: a mighty 230-year-old oak tree uprooted by a storm became the creative inspiration and starting point for a ten-year work process in 2008. Gamperl transformed the giant with a diameter of 2.7 meters and a weight of 33 tons into a unique ensemble of 97 differently shaped vessels with a sculptural appearance. In addition, the exhibition shows current works by the artist in dialog with works of baroque woodturning in wood and ivory from the museum's collection.
On Sunday, May 18, the museum invites visitors to a guided tour with the artist at 11 a.m. Anyone interested is cordially invited to immerse themselves in the world of woodturning and learn more about his work, the pieces and his inspiration in an exchange with Ernst Gamperl.
Sun, 18.05., 11 a.m. | Dialogue tour with Ernst Gamperl and curator Dr. Annette Schommers | Costs: admission to the exhibition, guided tour free of charge | no registration necessary.
