Is a building material at the end of its original purpose also at the end of its life cycle? Is there potential for a second life? We’ve created an interactive installation made of plain tiles.
The "Feierabendziegel" installation consists of reclaimed building material waiting to be used again. On the one hand, the "Feierabend" roof tiles are connected to a centuries-old tradition. Plain roof tiles were originally adorned with certain decorative elements and then built into the roof to mark special occasions – either as a lucky charm, for the topping-out ceremony or to document the end of a day's work. On the other hand, it symbolises a fundamental question of our time: Do building materials really have their day after their original use?
To date, demolishing and rebuilding often cost less than reusing existing materials or adapting an existing building. Building with these reused materials saves resources, energy and emissions.
The roof tiles are staged, taking on a new life as a sculptural installation inside the mcbw pop-up and as single, handbag-sized artworks that visitors can choose to take with them. If wished, the roof tiles can be given away in larger numbers to find new homes in a future building projects. Our aim is to have an empty container on the last day.
