Paula Scher – Type is Image

Paula Scher (*1948) is considered the most influential graphic designer of her generation. She stands for innovative and uncompromising design.

The work of Paula Scher always revolves around typography. She develops symbols and letters that communicate like images.
Paula Scher produces a walk-in the exhibition of her work that allows visitors to immerse themselves in her world. From the floor via the walls through to hanging letters and posters visitors will be surrounded by Paula Scher’s works
This unique installation ensures that visitors experience Paula Scher’s work in a very special way. The exhibition features commissioned works from Scher’s early career through until the present day.
The examples are showcased alongside non-commissioned works in which the designer reveals herself to be an attentive, bold and humorous observer and commentator of her time. One example of this is her brochure on “Useless Information”, in which back in 1994 she addresses the overabundance of freely available advice in a manner which is both critical and ironic.
In large display cases designed with a typographical touch visitors can experience how the graphic designer goes about her work.

For some 20 years, one major interest of Paula Scher has been to create hand-painted typographical maps of the world. Once again, her key focus is on the typography. She questions the apparent objectivity of maps and makes a point of showing subjective impressions and views of the regions in question.
