Opening: CHAWANS / French Tea Bowl Exhibition

UNEARTHED is showing a unique selection of tea bowls by 8 contemporary french ceramicists. Join us for an exciting opening evening with various styles, several artists attending, and drinks/bites.

French Japanophilia is particularly visible in the contemporary ceramics scene in France today. The fascination with Japanese aesthetics and concepts such as wabi-sabi is reflected in a strong appreciation of the chawan. The Chawan (jap. for "tea bowl") is the centrepiece of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, the vessel which holds the green frothy Matcha, but at the end it is also just a bowl. We are featuring 8 unique french perspectives on the Chawan, which are all utilising different styles, techniques and materials.

The modern French Chawan is often made exclusively from wild foraged clays and materials, it is created by utilising wood-fire and often the final result is shaped more by nature than by its maker.
